A hike on the Pacific Crest Trail

Hi everyone. This blog will chronicle my walk along the Pacific Crest Trail. Snoop around and find out about who I am, why I'm doing this, what I'll be bringing, and follow along as I hopefully make it all the way from Mexico to Canada.

About

Hi, I'm Scott.

In my current life stage, I can most often be found sipping cappacino and tapping away at my Masters thesis, outside running around with my dog Abbey, or bobbing in the ocean on a surfboard. My graduate research involves trying to understand what makes a good parent penguin.

That's right, I said penguin!

These are Adelie Penguins, and I'm super fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to travel to Antarctica to work with them.

I grew up in a rural part of Northern California, and had an amazing childhood wandering amongst giant redwoods and along a wild coastline. More often than not as a kid I was itchy with poison oak, fairly dirty, and loving every bit of it.

I kept on loving it through college at UC Santa Cruz, where I really got interested in backpacking and eventually ended up working with the Outdoor Recreation department there leading wilderness trips.

After college, I spent 8 years working as a field biologist based out of the Palomarin Field Station. located on the edge of the Point Reyes National Seashore about an hour north of San Francisco. I worked with song birds and Northern Spotted Owls, and also got the great chance to go work with the penguins. The Palomarin Field Station is still very close to my heart; it's run by Point Blue Conservation Science, and non-profit that does great research. You can check out the Palomarin blog by following the link over there on the right of your screen.

My wife Libby and I have lived together in various places in the San Francisco region for over 10 years. We moved to Corvallis , Oregon in 2012 so I could go to graduate school. Libby now works and lives in CA, so once I finish my degree we'll be moving back there permanently.

Before I plunge back in to the workforce, I'll be fullfilling a long-time dream and attempting a hike of the Pacific Crest Trail!!
